200HR DECOLONIZED YOGA TEACHER TRAINING

Course Intention

This Yoga Alliance-approved training is designed to free and decolonize the mind and body, offering a clearer path forward in life, career, and relationships. Rooted in the wisdom of ancient civilizations that viewed the world through a similar lens of balance and harmony (Ma'at), this deep dive into physical and mental alignment goes beyond asanas, cueing and anatomy. You’ll have the opportunity to not only receive a certification to be an instructor but most importantly with a profound understanding of the True Self (Atman).  This is an inclusive training where to be decolonized is to love who you are through the Yoga of Bhakti (Devotion), Jnana (Wisdom), and Karma (Selfless Action).

Course Expectations

  • To be transformed by the training.
  • We ask that you have 1 year of dedicated practice so you are familiar with basic asanas. This is especially for those who want to teach, not necessary for those who want to deepen their own understanding of the practice.
  • Come with a beginners mind, ready to listen and engage beyond what you already know.
  • Yoga classes and modules to shape your personal practice and deepen asana knowledge.
  • Anatomy breakdowns of the physical and the subtle (chakras, koshas, nervous systems, etc.) body.
  • Deep dives to understanding intelligent sequencing to build strength, flexibility and ease in a students body and mind.
  • Additional outside classes for observation  - virtual or in-person (for the summer intensive, the additional classes may be taken before the start of training).
  • Practice Teaching homework for real world experience and application of lessons.
  • Weekly Mental Yoga / Philosophy readings, discussions, and homework off the mat.
  • Optional one-on-one time with the Lead Trainers - Scheduled Office Hours
  • To be challenged physically, mentally and emotionally.
  • Be ready to take responsibility for what emotions come up when challenged.
  • Books needed: Yoga Anatomy 3rd Edition, The Living Gita: The Complete Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and Yamas and Niyamas by Deborah Adele.

About the Training

Ja has spent the past 15 years developing this training around the concept of personal responsibility, drawing on ancient wisdom from the Nile Valley (Kemetic), the Indus Valley (Yogic), and South America (Mayan and Toltec). Co-created at The Tree in 2014, Ja led the program from 2017-2024, shaping his unique Decolonized approach to the practice. The aim of this training is to free our minds from the sense of separation that limits our true potential. The Age of Aquarius demands we build a new story of inclusion of all human beings not races, ethnicities or other dividing lines. This is a training based on the revolutionary Vinyasa Yoga from Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya who introduced Vinyasa Krama. His students K. Pattabhi Jois (founder of Ashtanga) and  B. K. S. Iyengar (founder of Iyengar Yoga who introduced props) would go on to inspire teachers like Bryan Kest (founder of Power Yoga.) By the end of the program, you can expect to be stronger and more flexible in your personal practice, notice a significant reduction in stress and anxiety, have greater clarity in your path forward, improved relationships, and become a Yoga Alliance certified Decolonized Yoga Teacher.

As an E-RYT 500HR Yoga Alliance-approved Trainer, Ja's students have gone on to teach globally, from Hot8 and CorePower Studios in LA to yoga studios in Chicago, France, Japan, Germany, and more. The training's foundation is Decolonized Philosophy, also known as the "Red Pill," along with anatomy-centered sequencing, in-depth asana breakdowns, Patanjali’s 8 Limbs of Yoga, and the mission of Social Equity, guided by the principles of Ma'at (the Kemetic Goddess of truth, harmony, and justice). You’ll gain essential business and marketing tools to launch your yoga career. Yoga can be a powerful vehicle for social equity, inspiring you to build more just and inclusive communities and relationships. We are committed to providing a safe space for all to learn how to listen and meet others where they are—without judgment or expectation. The best teachers are first and foremost students.

Through Ja's "Red Pill" conversations, students are encouraged to find their authentic voice and expression of the practice. Taking the "Red Pill" is an invitation to discover the power of your individual experience and the beliefs that may hold you back. Yoga is not about always being sunny, it's acknowledging our faults our shadows, or our moons. This training goes beyond Asana, Anatomy, and sequencing—it's leadership development, relationship healing, stress relief, and soul liberation. By the end, you will experience a transformative shift in perspective that can change your life. Not mention the deep connection created by a like minded group of yogis on the same journey.
